Back from the desert + 2 shows: Lake Charles Oct 17 & Austin Nov 14

Songs from the desert, a homecoming in Lake Charles, and a double header in Austin
Songs from the desert, a homecoming in Lake Charles, and a double header in Austin

Hi friends,
I just got back from Crooked Crow, a songwriting retreat hosted by the incredible J Wagner at Chinati Hot Springs, way out in the desert on the Mexican border south of Marfa. No signal, no screens, hot water, big sky, and a whole lot of songs, shared with great songwriters from all over the country. Turns out I needed that off-grid time more than I knew. If you write songs and want a weekend like this, check out https://www.crookedcrow.net/. I’m home refreshed and rolling at full speed: baseball games, exciting Wavemakers work, clients, and plenty of music on the way.
Two big things for your radar:

Saturday, Oct 17th | ChuckFest in Lake Charles, LA
I'm bringing the full band home to play my hometown for the first time in many years. ChuckFest is SUPER RAD and I’m so excited to come down. We play at 8pm. Lineup and details here: https://chuckfest.org/#lineup

Saturday, Nov 14th | Austin band show + Ginger Leigh’s Birthday Bash
My new single “Same Old Story Different Man” comes out in November, and we’re celebrating at Captain Quack’s Soundspace. Ginger and I are doing a double header, which means two full shows for $20. What a steal!
It’s been a couple of years since I played full band shows, so I’m thrilled to be on stage with some of my favorite Austin area musicians: Noelle Hampton, Andre Moran, Michael Stevens, and Robb Kidd. Ginger is celebrating her birthday and bringing some great collaborators to the stage too.
What I’m loving right now
The Wild Edge of Sorrow by Francis Weller. This is a thoughtful, beautiful exploration of the journey through grief and sorrow, with gentle suggestions for rituals and gathering practices that help us share and metabolize grief together as a community. So many of us mask, hide, compartmentalize, and anesthetize our grief. This book is gentle and so helpful for navigating all the big feelings of these uncertain times.
“The Setting of the Summer Sun” by The Belle Sounds. A brilliant, haunting, harmony-rich song about grief, time, and love. It soothes me when I’m feeling like a mess, and I keep coming back to it. “I can't hold you like an anchor anymore. . there’s a way for me to want you and want more. . .”
I love you all and I can’t wait to see you out in the wild.
